Release Date 18 October 2011
Following the Government's energy bill summit yesterday, in which the phrase "check, switch and insulate" was heralded as the way forward in saving money on winter fuel bills, the National Insulation Association (NIA) have produced some hard-hitting facts to encourage people to insulate without delay and save money this winter.
"The facts speak for themselves but more needs to be done to raise public awareness of the benefits of insulation," commented Neil Marshall, NIA Chief Executive; "Whilst checking you are on the right tariff and switching energy supplier can help to reduce bills, this takes time and the thing that you can do immediately to bring down energy bills is to insulate now."
At present there are:
• Over 6 million homes requiring Cavity Wall Insulation
• Around 10 million lofts with inadequate insulation
• 7 million homes that have solid walls that are not insulated
The savings to be made are equally striking:
• Cavity Wall Insulation can save up to £135* per year
• Loft Insulation can save up to £175** per year
• Solid Wall Insulation can save up to £475*** per year
In addition there are currently large savings to be made on the cost of having insulation measures installed. The Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT) which is operated by the energy suppliers, is a scheme which runs in England, Wales and Scotland which offers all customers free or heavily subsidised home insulation.
Marshall also advised that: "The CERT scheme is due to finish at the end of 2012 and so householders should act now to ensure that they do not miss out."
The NIA also advises that, for peace of mind, householders should contact its members for a free quotation and advice on the best type of insulation suitable for their home. Not only are they bound by a strict Code of Professional Practice, but are also able to advise on the range of grants and subsidies available and how to apply.
To find out more, or to contact their local installer, householders should visit the NIA website on www.nationalinsulationassociation.org.uk or call 01525383313
*Based on adding cavity wall insulation (CWI) (saving around £135 per year). Saving based on an uninsulated three bed semi detached gas heated house. With current low installation costs the payback period can be as little as one to three years
**Based on adding loft insulation (LI) of 270mm (saving around £175 per year) Saving based on an uninsulated three bed semi detached gas heated house With current low installation costs the payback period can be as little as one to three years
** Estimated savings if an uninsulated home installed Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) (saving of around £475) - based on a three bedroom gas heated semi detached house.
